Scientists have produced the first evidence in humans that beta-blocker drugs slow clogging up of the arteries.

This process, known as atherosclerosis, can lead to potentially fatal cardiovascular problems.

Researchers tested the impact of beta-blockers on the carotid arteries of volunteers, who although healthy had begun to show signs of atherosclerosis.

The carotid arteries, which are found in the neck, supply blood to the brain.

Narrowing of the vessels can lead to blockages which may result in a stroke.

The three-year study found that low doses (25 mg. once daily) of the beta-blocker drug metoprolol CR/XL slowed the rate of progression of atherosclerosis by 40%.

Beta-blockers are generally used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure and to prevent recurrent heart attacks.

Dr Bo Hedblad, of Malmo University Hospital, Sweden, who led the researcher said: "This is the first randomised trial to show that metoprolol CR/XL has an anti-atherosclerotic effect in humans.

"Although studies in animals have shown some beta-blockers have an anti-atherosclerotic effect, until now, there has been no direct evidence of the effect in humans."

The researchers believe that the central nervous system may play an important - but as yet unknown - role in accelerating atherosclerosis

Lead researcher Professor Rory Collins said: "People with diabetes have a higher risk of heart attacks and strokes than the general population, and most of their deaths are due to cardiovascular disease.

"So, these new results are extremely important, not only for the very many people who have diabetes but also for the health systems that have to cope with this increasing global problem."

Dr Sue Roberts, the UK's National Clinical Director for Diabetes, said the research provided clear evidence that taking statins was an effective way for people with diabetes to ward off cardiovascular problems.

"Reducing the risk of heart and blood vessel disease by planning individual care is one of the first targets in the Diabetes National Service Framework, and I want to ensure that the lessons of this research are acted upon everywhere as quickly as possible."

Simon O'Neill, Head of Care Developments, Diabetes UK, said: "We hope that all health care professionals will take this research into account when treating people with diabetes.

"Many people could benefit greatly if offered statins as an integral part of their diabetes care programme."

The research is published in The Lancet medical journal.

US rapper Jay-Z is to headline this summer's Glastonbury Festival, it has been confirmed.
Organiser Michael Eavis told BBC Somerset the star was on the bill for the event in June.
He said he wanted to "break with tradition this time and put on something totally different".
Meanwhile, registration for the three-day festival has opened. Anyone wanting to attend must submit their details and a photo by 15 March.
Mr Eavis said he hoped Jay-Z would attract a younger audience to the event.
"He will appeal to the young people and under-25s for sure, so that's a big pull for them," he said.
"It's not like the traditional one we do, like Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse and Oasis."
Registration opened on Friday. It does not guarantee a ticket, but everyone who wants to buy a ticket when they go on sale on 6 April must have registered first.
Some 175,000 people will attend the festival from 27-29 June.
The rest of this year's line-up remains a closely guarded secret, although Neil Diamond will play the veteran's slot on the Sunday.
